Depends on why you laughed. ; )
de Tocqueville was fascinated by the American experiment as a French philosopher experiencing the pains of their own revolution. He has provided some pretty amazing insights into how this country 'might' go... and much has appeared quite accurate.
The quote was meant to seem a bit absurd, yet upon reflection, one might feel we are being bribed with our own money into some sort of economic hope???
